How to Lay Laminate Flooring: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

A simple guide to installing laminate flooring yourself. Follow our step-by-step process, avoid common mistakes and get a professional finish at home.

If you’ve never installed flooring before, laminate is one of the easiest ways to transform your space. It’s durable, cost-effective and designed with a simple click system that makes installation straightforward — even for first-timers.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to lay laminate flooring step by step, including what tools you need, common mistakes to avoid and how to get a professional finish.

What you need before you start

  • Laminate flooring
  • Underlay (essential for comfort and longevity)
  • Spacers (to maintain expansion gaps)
  • Saw or laminate cutter
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Rubber mallet or tapping block

Step 1: Prepare your subfloor

Your subfloor should be clean, dry and level. Remove any debris and check for uneven areas — this helps prevent movement or creaking later.

Step 2: Lay your underlay

Roll out your underlay across the room, edge to edge. This improves comfort underfoot, reduces noise and protects your flooring.

Tip: Some modern laminate options include built-in underlay, saving you time and money.

Step 3: Start your first row

Begin along the longest wall, placing spacers to maintain a 10mm expansion gap. This allows your floor to expand and contract naturally.

Step 4: Click the boards together

Laminate flooring uses a click system — simply angle the board, click into place and lower it down. Work row by row across the room.

Step 5: Stagger your joints

For strength and a natural look, stagger the joints by at least 30cm between rows.

Step 6: Cut boards to size

Measure carefully and cut boards where needed using a saw or laminate cutter. Always double check before cutting.

Step 7: Finishing touches

Remove spacers, install skirting or beading and add door bars where required. This completes the professional look.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Not leaving expansion gaps (this can cause lifting)
  • Installing on an uneven subfloor
  • Forgetting underlay
  • Not staggering joints properly
